The coloured label you see inside an elevator cabin or at its entrance shows the result of its last periodic inspection. Here we explain what each colour means and how to move away from a bad label.
What is a periodic inspection?
In Turkey, elevators are inspected once a year by type-A inspection bodies authorised by the municipality. This is different from monthly maintenance: maintenance is done by the service company, while the periodic inspection is carried out by an independent inspection body. A report is issued and a coloured label showing the elevator’s status is attached.
The label colours
Green: safe
The elevator passed the inspection. All you need to do is keep it that way with regular maintenance.
Blue: slightly defective
Minor deficiencies that do not directly threaten safety were found. The elevator can stay in use, but the deficiencies in the report must be fixed.
Yellow: defective
There are defects that must be fixed within the period stated in the report, followed by a follow-up inspection. If they are not fixed in time, the elevator may get a red label.
Red: unsafe
The elevator was found unsafe and is taken out of service. It can only run again after the defects are fixed and it passes a new inspection.
Getting from red or yellow to green
- Read the report. Each deficiency is listed separately. Send the report to your maintenance company.
- Prioritise. Items that directly affect safety come first. Some are fixed with a simple repair, others need new parts or modernisation.
- Fix the deficiencies. All work is documented.
- Prepare for the follow-up. The inspection body checks again and updates the label if everything is in order.
