Elevators are long-lived systems, but components such as the controller, doors and drive wear out over time. Renewing them makes the elevator both safer and more comfortable. So how do you know it’s time?
1. Starts and stops are jerky
If the car doesn’t level properly at the floor, or jolts when starting or stopping, the cause is usually an old controller and drive. Modern drives smooth out acceleration and braking and improve levelling.
2. Breakdowns are getting frequent
If you are calling for service several times a month, tackling the root cause can be cheaper than replacing parts each time.
3. Spare parts are hard to find
Discontinued parts are expensive and slow to source, which can leave the elevator out of service for days.
4. The doors are misbehaving
Doors that open and close slowly or noisily, get stuck or close on users affect both comfort and safety. New automatic doors and door locks are among the most common modernisation jobs.
5. The same deficiencies keep appearing at inspection
If your elevator gets a blue or yellow label every year with the same deficiencies, it’s time for a proper modernisation plan that fixes them for good.
6. Energy use and noise have increased
Older machines use more energy and run louder. Modern machines and drives usually cut consumption and run more quietly.
Modernise or replace?
Not every old elevator needs replacing. If the rails, shaft and suspension are sound, renewing the controller, doors and cabin is often enough. The right decision can only be made after an on-site inspection.
